This film wreaks of QT from the opening credits, music and Chapter titles. I consider it a typical Tarantino film. That being said I loved this film. It is a fun story. Not in one way historically accurate but a fun ride. Brad Pitts character was a laugh in itself. I think this just had to be a fun character for him to play. This an all out Violent Comedy. I almost felt wrong for laughing when people were being brutally killed, yet there I was chuckling. Earlier this week I had said the District 9 was my favorite movie of this summer. But I will have to say that I.B. has taken the cake on that one. I think what I liked about this film the most is the fact that QT loves practical effects. Not all this CG stuff. You can sometimes tell it is practical but I thinks that what makes it laughable. I am just glad to see a film that doesn't look like a video game for once! I may have to go see this one in the theater again.

Not So Funny People

In my boredom this weekend I ended up going to the film Funny People. I don't know if my expectations for this film were a little high but for some reason this film was a total let down. Was this supposed to be a comedy, drama or both? I am not sure, but what ever it was sure didn't work. I don't even want to waste my time talking about this poorly made film so in summary this film is terribly written! Terribly acted! And lasts about 40 minutes longer then it should.(I even heard a lady in front of me say this isn't over yet?) The laughs are far and few between. There is no character build up in any what way. I am trying to think of one positive thing to say about this film, but I figure I have better things to do. Honestly don't waste your time with this film!!!

Transformers 2

OK. Where to begin. Let me just start by saying I have always thought when it comes to directing actors, Michael Bay is probably one of the worst in the industry. But when it comes to directing and pulling off an amazing and visual action sequence he is probably one of the best! That being said. There is only one reason to go see this movie. For amazing action sequences involving alien robots that turn into vehicles. Seriously that is the only reason to see this film. I would of totally enjoyed this film 100% if there were no human actors involved. Just one big alien robot war would of made me happy. Don't get me wrong Shia Lebouf is a great actor, and Megan Fox is drop dead gorgeous. But that doesn't save this film from so many pitfalls.

I will begin with the editing of this film. I don't know maybe I am just to picky but this film seemed so choppy the whole way through! So many of the cuts just didn't feel right. Next the comic relief aspect of this movie was terrible. There were a few laughable moments, but so many times I think they tried just a little to hard. I think my biggest complaint of the film would be the introduction of the Twins. These two robots were just down right annoying the whole film. They reminded me of Jar Jar Binks in Episode I. I was actually excited when one of them was supposedly destroyed.

Of course in the end they left it open for another film to be made. I won't lie I hope they make a 3rd movie. I will go see it. Why you ask? Because there is nothing like seeing giant alien robots kicking each others ass on the big screen. And you never know maybe Michael will actually learn how to direct the human race by then.

Let The Summer Blockbusters Begin.

Well it isn't really summer yet, but the big blockbuster films are hitting the theaters already. It has been a long time since I used this blog, so I figured I would give a review of the 4 films I have seen so far.

First of course was X-men Origins Wolverine. I didn't have high hopes for this film going into it. Although Wolverine is one of my favorite comic book characters, I knew this film wasn't going to do him justice. Don't get me wrong. This film isn't terrible, there are a few great one liners, and of course some great action scenes, but I don't think it saves it from "The Just Another Comic Book Movie" category. That is exactly what it is. If you are going to make a comic book movie do it right (exe. The Dark Knight) I feel that the film industry has found a new moneymaker for them and are pumping these films out not caring about story or quality. So yeah Wolverine was OK, but it could of been a whole lot better!

Next is Star Trek. Before I begin I should let you know. I have never truly been a Trek fan. (Sorry Trekkies) But I have to say this was a fun film. I wasn't totally blown away by this film, but it was a fun ride. By far the best Trek movie made to date. It was hard for me to believe it was a Star Trek movie. I mean the story was decent, the acting wasn't terrible. (Except for the villain. Didn't like him much) but all and all I liked this film. Here is a clip the onion put together. I think it makes my point.

Terminator Salvation. Let me just say. Awesome!!! I enjoyed this film through and through. This is a great action film! This film is definitely not about the acting. It is about the action!! (Though the acting is decent) So what did I like about this film? I liked the story, the cinematography, the sound design, even the Music of Danny Elfman wasn't to bad. (Not my favorite composer) This could be my favorite action flick of the summer, But I have a feeling that Transformers 2 and G.I. Joe have a good chance of knocking it out of the top spot.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 216px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_NbpTkVIsYr0/SiCdyuAKd8I/AAAAAAAAAVM/YzF2ClMW1SQ/s320/up" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341442652729145282" />

Tonight I was able to view the Disney/Pixar film UP. Let me just say. Pixar you have not let me down yet. Of course this film is visually amazing, and the story is wonderful. I found it interesting that it seemed like the first 20 minutes of this there wasn't really any dialog, but you learned so much about the main character in that time. Of course this film has something to do with friendship and doing the right thing.(Seems to be a common theme in these films.) There are a lot of great laughs throughout the movie. I was so into it I didn't even notice all the annoying little kids and there comments. That being said. This is a great film for the kids. Oh yeah and of course there is a nice short animation before the movie. I won't give it away, but I think it is one of my favorites so far. Now I need to go see it in 3D

Who Watches the Watchmen?

Unfortunately.I watched the Watchmen. I even rode in the back of an uncomfortable jeep for 2 hours to see this film on Imax. But seeing the Transformers trailer on the Imax screen made the trip worth it. I must admit it was so nice to be in a decent theater for once.

I also must admit I kind of knew I wasn't going to enjoy this film going into it. I had actually read the Graphic Novel and I hated the story. After reading it I thought how are you going to make this into a movie that doesn't drag on. This movie is slow moving at times, but that is because the graphic novel is. If you have never read the novel and are expecting a high paced action film you are mistaken. Don't get me wrong. There are some great action sequences in this film and and definite great visual moments, but still I found myself somewhat bored between those moments. The only character I really enjoyed in the book and in the film was Rorschach. Though I didn't enjoy this film. I do feel they did a great job of adapting it from the Novel to the Screen. They handled the flashbacks very well. So if you are into movies purely because of the visuals, and not the story or performances this is a film you would like. This film is a definite R for the strong Violence and Sexual content. So if either of these make you queasy, I would strongly warn you not to watch the Watchmen.

I will give the Director Zach Snyder props, for being a great director of visual films. But hey how about working on the story and the performances next time. Really I felt the same way about the Film "300" That he directed. I see on IMDB that he has quite a few movies in the works.Including a 2nd 300 film? To me that is like making "Crank 2". Pointless!!

I actually might of had a different perspective going into this film, if I hadn't read the graphic novel. Who knows maybe I would of been giving this movie praises. So to all the people who think they should read the book before they see the film. I say don't it might make the film more enjoyable. But hey they had a cool trailer

The Wrestler

So I finally saw the film The Wrestler Tonight. After reading all the reviews and hearing all the hype. I can say "Ehh It was alright" Mickey Rourke's performance is good. I also enjoyed the story, depressing as it is. I didn't really care for the hand held cinematography. I really don't know why it has become so widely used in the film industry. Mike who I went to the film with was flustered that Marisa Tomei received an Oscar Nomination for best supporting actress for this film. I agree with him. There was nothing outstanding about her performance. If anything Evan Rachel Wood should of received the nomination for her role as the daughter in this film. But hey she didn't take her shirt off. So that isn't Oscar Worthy!! So all and all this film is enjoyable. A little slow at times,a little predictable. But it is watchable.I did enjoy the ending. Oh by the way if anyone ever asks you to party like a fireman. I would suggest you say no.

Push!

So I went the the film Push this weekend. I worried that it was just some rip off of my favorite show Heroes. But I was presently surprised! This is a very fun film. This is a film about people with powers, but unlike heroes some of the powers are to almost feasible. (Still unlikely) They have names for all the different powers. You have Sniffers. They literally sniff things that someone has touched and tell you where that person is. There are watchers who see the future. Movers are able to move things with their minds and Pushers who are able to put thoughts into your mind. There are a few more powers like a Shadower who can hide someone or something from a watcher, also some guys with crazy vocals that scream loud enough to the point it will kill you. Oh and like Heroes an eraser who can erase memories! There are a few more powers but I will stop there.

So pretty much this film is about an Agency called division who wants to take these powers and make them stronger and make a super army. A chain of events happens that allows one of Divisions test subjects to escape, which brings all these people with telekinetic and clairvoyant abilities together to hopefully bring the agency down. I will admit the film is a little slower then I would have liked, but it still had some fun action sequences, and I enjoyed the plot of the film. Didn't really care for Dakota Fanning in this film, but it didn't ruin it. I did love her nemesis watcher. I love it when a film actually makes you hate a person!! I give this film an A-

Eastwood is genius!!

So I was finally able to see the film Gran Torino tonight. I have heard rave reviews from so many people. And now I know why. Clint Eastwood is a genius when it comes to making films. This film dives into some touchy matters of course including racism. One thing I noticed about this film is a lot of the actors (Other then Mr. Eastwood) were not polished actors in any way. In sense I felt some of the acting was amateur, but I think it made the film feel even more realistic to me. So I don't think I see any Oscars coming its way for acting, but I do feel it deserves a nod for screenplay. The writing in this film is amazing. This is not a fast paced film but is so well written. The ending is somewhat predictable, but still I enjoyed it. I love at the end of the film when the credits start. The old raspy voice that you hear through out the whole movie is heard singing a song. Mr. Eastwood I must say. You are the man. Hands down one of the greatest directors of all time!!!

The Spirit. It is less then Brilliant. Just because you used fancy technology and played with the coloring of this film does not make it brilliant. Yeah I dropped my jaw a few times in reaction to how poorly written this film was. It is not even close to being the best film of the year. I would not even dare compare it to films such as The Dark Night. Though it does kind of remind me of the old Batman T.V. series. I guess you could say I was blown away that some one actually produced this film. There is nothing heart pounding about this film. I guess the eye popping could refer to all the cleavage shown in this film. Trust me there is plenty of it. This film truly is mind blowing. It blows my mind how truly terrible it actually was. This film is in no way wild fun. It is wildly over the top. Samuel L. Jackson running around acting foolish and saying how much he hates eggs on his face. What? Those who have seen Sin City and are thinking this will be a lot like that film. You will be sorely mistaken. Don't waste your time with this movie. It is poorly written terrible acting and the visual aspects of it really are not that great. I give it an F yes I said an F. Valkyrie Not So Much!

So since I did not have anything better to do Christmas night, I treated myself to the movies. I originally planned on just going to see The Valkyrie movie with Tom Cruise just to see how bad it actually was. But when I got there I could not bring myself to go see it. So I decided to watch Slumdog Millionaire instead.

I am so glad I did. I enjoyed this movie from the start. It opens with Jamal a Slum dog orphan being tortured and questioned by the police. He has been a contestant on Who Wants to be a millionaire and is one question away from the million. But the host feels that he is somehow cheating. He tells them he is winning because he knows the answers. There is a story to why he knows the answer to each of the questions. Most of these stories involve Jamal his Brother and Jamals love interest Latika. I enjoyed the movie in so many aspects. Some of the editing was very clever. I did feel that some of the performances were a little weak at times, but in all it was well done. There are a lot of flashbacks, but that is how this film was written and it works. This one is definitely worth seeing. And of course they throw in a nice Bollywood style dance montage during the closing credits!

So after watching Slum Dog Millionaire, I figured hey why not see Valkyrie too. I figured if it was that bad I had at least seen on good film that night. So my biggest complaint about this movie is the fact that it is in English. And they do the whole thing where he is writing in his journal and speaking in German and there are English subtitles and subtly the German stops and he is speaking in English with the subtitles still there. A cheap way of getting out of having people actually learn to speak German. I really feel that Tom Cruise was so miscast for this film. Hearing him scream long live sacred Germany just didn't feel right. They do have an all star cast in this film but does not save it. I won't lie the movie wasn't as bad as I expected, but still I just think it could of been done so much better. I am not saying I could of made it better, but I figure there is somebody out there who could. I am a fan of Bryan Singer who directed this film, but lately I haven't been impressed with his work. You might remember his last film Superman returns. Yeah not so good. Not terrible, but yeah not so good. So if I were to grade this I guess I would give it a C+. Like I said it wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://justanothermoviecritic.blogspot.com/2008/12/slumdog-yes-valkyrie-not-so-much.html' title='Slumdog Yes! I have only just began to listen to this soundtrack!!! It is amazing!!! Scored by Hanz Zimmer and James Newton Howard. The sounds that Zimmer comes up with are amazing. Just listen to the opening track of the soundtrack "Why So Serious" and you will know what I mean. Also this is the extended soundtrack so there is music that was written for the film but not heard in it, and unfortunately that means scenes were cut from this amazing film.

As I said I have only listened to maybe half of this album, but I would suggest if you are a movie score fan this is one you add to your collection. So thank you Mark for the early Christmas Present for my ears!!!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://justanothermoviecritic.blogspot.com/2008/12/dark-knight-soundtrack.html' title='The Dark Knight! But due to distance and time constraint I was not able to go to the Theater that was playing that film. So instead I decided to go to the far more intellectual film The Day The Earth Stood Still. If you can't tell there is quite a strong hint of Sarcasm in my typing. This movie is my choice for second worst film of the year. It is a close tie but Max Payne is still worse..

As most of you know this is a remake of the 1951 version. Is the movie industry really so out of ideas that they have to keep doing adaptations and remakes of older films. Which by the way are usually way worse then the original.

This film is slow and boring right from the start. Within 20 minutes I was ready for the earth to be destroyed so that I could get up and leave. Of course I could of done that anyway, but for some strange reason I sat through the whole thing. I have to say that this film was a definite worst for Kathy Bates. I think her performance in water boy was even better then her performance in this film. This movie was definitely meant to be a visual film because the acting and performances were lacking. In talking about the visuals, I feel even some of CG was poorly done. There were a couple of camera shots I was impressed by, but that was about it.

Keanu Reeves plays the usual role. This time an alien who has a lot of blank stares and delivers all his lines in a monotone voice. Jennifer Connelly's performance is poor as usual. I swear the only reason she is cast in movies is because of those amazing eyes!! Really this film is just another stab at global warming. How we are all destroying this planet. So the aliens were coming to make sure we didn't. The whole time everyone begging. Please give us a chance. We can change. I swear that was said at least five times in the movie. Maybe not but it was sappy. Honestly I think that what would of made me enjoy this film is if the human race was actually destroyed. But of course the alien feels sorry for us pitiful humans and decides not to destroy the earth!! Yawn!

You know this is going to be a stinker when they start advertising the only place you are going to be able to see the new Wolverine trailer is if you go to this film. Which by the way I am not sure if I am to excited about the Wolverine movie, but I am excited about the New Terminator Movie which trailer was shown also. So if you want to see some cool trailers and one terrible movie. The Day The Earth Stood Still is the film for you. I think I am going to go watch The Dark Knight again to make myself fill better after watching such rubbish!!

Oh Daniel

So as you know 007 Quantum of Solace Just came out. As you know I enjoyed the film. But there is another film that Daniel Craig is starring in that I am excited to see. I saw the trailer for the film Defiance months ago, and I have wanted to see it ever since. It will be released in select theaters Dec 31, but the actual release date is January 16, 2009. If you haven't seen the trailer yet here it is. Also you can click on the Defiance Link in Upcoming movies bar if you would like to learn more about this film.

Flash Of Genius

This film is based on the true story of Robert Kearns the inventor of the intermittent windshield wiper. I know what you are thinking. "Oh that sound like a real exciting film" I won't lie it is a little slow, but I think this film is well done. Robert Kearns (Greg Kinnear) comes up with a working design for the intermittent windshield wiper. He shows the design to a close friend. They get the patents for it and of course go to the big boys (Ford) to try and sale it. Of course Ford wants the design and will do anything to get it. Long story short Ford steals Kearns design. Kearn is furious and wants to go after them. Of course nobody thinks Kearns has a chance, but he never gives up. It is really a powerful story and sad story. Really this is just a story about a man standing up to the big guy saying hey I don't have to take this. The sad part of the story is the fact that he is so driven to get Ford to admit they stole his design he alienates friends and family along the way.

So all and all this was a good film. No complaints with the acting. Your basic drama. I will give this film a B+.

Also I kind of find it ironic this film comes out right about the time the Big 3 auto companies are begging the government for financial assistance. Fast boat chase scenes! Fast airplane chase scenes! Fist fights! Gun fights! Explosions! Yes indeed it is a James Bond flick! This was an enjoyable film. The action sequences in this film are amazing. That being said I must admit the story was a little weak, but looking back on the Bond films a lot of them are. I didn't care for Mathieu Almaric as the villain Dominic Greene. He just seemed a little to sissy to be a James Bond villain. I do think Daniel Craig makes a great Bond! Hope to see him in a few more.

So if I was to grade this film I would give it a B+. For the great action sequences and the fact that it is a James Bond movie.

Clint Eastwood! I honestly think I can now say Mr. Eastwood is one of the greatest directors of all time. This film is amazing. I have a new found respect for Angelina Jolie. Her performance is awesome!!! This film is not a fast paced film, yet you find yourself on the edge of your seat the whole time. What an amazing and sad story. I don't think anyone but Mr. Eastwood could of pulled this film off. If this film is not Oscar worthy I don't know what is. I can see this one taking a few home. Even John Malcovich could earn a nomination for his part as Rev. Gustav Briegleb. A pastor who's mission is to expose corruption within the LAPD. I enjoyed every aspect of this film. The writing, the cinematography, the music. Which come to find out Mr. Eastwood composed. Is there anything you can't do Dirty Harry?! So I give this film an A+++++. Two Thumbs Up!! A must see!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://justanothermoviecritic.blogspot.com/2008/11/clint-eastwood-need-i-say-more.html' title='Clint Eastwood! This is your basic good cop bad cop movie. The good cop (Norton) is faced with a dilemma. Do the right thing and tear apart his family who has a long history of being police. Or make the wrong decision to save their reputation.

This wasn't a terrible film. There were some down right intense scenes. One in particular involving a baby and an iron! The story was good, but I think they tried to put just a little to much into it and some scenes just didn't feel like they were really important to the direction the film was going. Also I am getting really sick of the overuse of the shaky and jittery camera shots. I will admit when done right (Like in HBO's Band of Brothers) it is effective, but there is a point when there is too much shake!! So please stop it.

So all in all I liked this film. Maybe shorten it by 20 or 30 minutes and I would of really enjoyed it. I figure they boys of NYPD aren't to fond of this one!

Also this weekend I was able to watch the foreign film Mongol. Which shows the life of Temudgen and how he becomes Ghengis Khan This one is all subtitles. Sorry no English dub (Thank Goodness) The cinematography in this film was wonderful. There were also some nice bloody battle scenes. That being said this film was just a little on slow side for my taste. So visually a great film, and thats about it.

A Payne To See!!!

So I did a blog awhile ago talking about the film Max Payne. Adapted from the popular video game. As stated in my first blog I was a little worried about this film. The trailer made it look amazing, but after finding out it was directed by John Moore I really lost all hope in it being any good.

I can honestly say this is the worst film I have seen this year! Hands down. The writing is terrible the acting is terrible the editing is terrible. Pointless flashbacks. Somewhat cookie cutter plot. There is no character build up. People just appear you never really ever connect with them. Not Even Paynes (Wahlberg) character has any depth.

There are some great visual effects, and the I did like the the dark colors and hues in the film. But they do not redeem it from the utter stench of being a major stinker. Probably the best part of this movie is the CG closing credits. That is really about the only thing I enjoyed about this film.I think I would of rather wasted 100 minutes playing the actual game!!!

Elegy

I never in my life thought I would find a film that moves so slowly to be so entertaining! Elegy. Directed Isabel Coixet is a great film that dives deep into the thoughts and actions of David Kapesh (Ben Kingsley) a college professor who starts a love affair with his student Consuela Castillo (Penelope Cruz).

This is such a well written film! Ben Kingsley is outstanding. I think his role is Oscar worthy. Penelope Cruz has never been high on my list of favorite actors, but the chemistry between her and Kingsley is phenomenal. Throw in Dennis Hopper and you can't go wrong. As I said before the film moves a little slow. But I think it was meant to.I have always liked the concept of sad happy endings. Which this film has. I will say some of the editing in this film was a little jumpy to me, but some of the editing was also ingenious. The Cammocks who referred this movie to me. Described this movie perfectly in one sentence. "I thought it was about love, life and death, the meeting of youth and age." It is exactly that! Thanks for the great referral.

Dinner and a movie!

So my great and crazy friends the Cammocks invited me over for dinner Sunday evening. After a great spread and fun conversations they popped in the movie "The Savages" Starring Laura Linney and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Written and directed by Tamara Jenkins. Who I honestly don't know one thing about. But for some reason the pictures I have seen of her make me think she writes movies for the Lifetime Channel.

That being said. The Savages is definitely not a Lifetime movie. It is a raw and genius look at a brother and sister who now have to take care of a father who wasn't ever really there for them. This film is a little slow moving at times, but there are so many scenes where the deliverance is just classic. Both Linney and Hoffman do a great job, as well as Philip Brosco who plays their senile father.

I think this film probably hits close to home to so many people who have had to go through similar situations. Though I don't think most families are quite as dis functional as this one.

This film is rated R for language some (PG-13) bedroom scenes and old people writing with fecal matter!

Martian Children and Men in Iron Suits

Just wanted to remind everyone that Iron Man was released on DVD & Blu Ray today. It was probably one of my favorite flicks this summer.I would strongly recommend adding this one to your collection.

This week my DVD of the week is Martian Child. Starring John Cusack.

David (Cusack) a science fiction writer and widower, who finds himself doing the unthinkable and adopting a kid. But not just any kid. He decides to adopt Dennis(Bobby Coleman) who believes he is a martian from mars. Being a single person and Dennis having the emotional issues. The adoption board keeps a close watch on them. At the same time his agent and publisher are pushing for a follow up to his last book. A recipe for drama.

The Good
I really enjoyed this film. I think it was well written and well directed. Cusack does an amazing job. It is hard to believe that a single guy would want to adopt, but John Cusack makes it believable. And who better to play his sister then his sister Joan Cusack. I think the big surprise for me out of this film was Amanda Peet. (Never been a big fan) She plays the part of Harlee a longtime friend of David and his widowed wife. It is not a big part but I think Amanda played it well. And she looked good doing it.

The Bad
Not much to complain about. There were a couple scenes that really didn't keep the film moving forward, but they were still great scenes. So I guess no real complaints here.

This film is a definite for the Drama Category. No action. Just great writing and a few moments that will probably bring certain people to tears (Not me I am a man!)

Big Brothers Watching.

That's right! Turn off your cellphones and PDA's. Cancel all your networking pages and blogs, because Big Brother is watching you. If you are not careful you will become activated. That is pretty much the synopsis of the new film Eagle Eye. Starring Shia LeBeouf, Michelle Monaghan, and Billy Bob Thornton. Directed by D.J. Caruso (Disturbia)

Jerry Shaw (LeBeouf) and Rachel Holoman (Monaghan) receive mysterious phone calls and told that they are activated and must do what they are told are there will be consequences. Every move they make is being watched, and the tasks they are given make them fugitives from the law and agent Thomas Morgan (Thornton) is hot on their tail every step of the way of this roller coaster ride.

All and all this film is enjoyable. The acting is done very well. The part of Jerry Shaw fits LeBeouf very well. Even Bill Bob Thornton did a good job. Most films with him in it I want to reach into the screen and punch him in the face for just being down right annoying!! So yeah the acting was good.

The story though that is where my complaint is! I guess some of the scenarios that the so called voice on the phone (which is female) was able to control were just a little to far fetched for me. And pretty quickly you realize who is giving the orders. Once you realize that you think of a few films that have been made in the past with this same plot point in it. I won't mention them as it will be somewhat a spoiler. Also I haven't put my finger on it quite yet but there was something about the flow of this film that bothered me. I guess it just didn't keep me on the edge of my seat with excitement as much as I hoped it would. Don't get me wrong there were some great action scenes. All I know is if given the chance I totally would be playing in an airport baggage facility!

So all and all this film was a fun ride. Not a great ride, but a fun one. I went to the $5.25 Matinee for this one, and I think that was a good choice on my part. Not quite sure if it is $8 worthy.

The Passing of a Legend!

As most of you have probably heard. The great actor and humanitarian Paul Newman passed away today at age 83. I just wanted to take a moment to remember him and some of his great work. Paul Newman was a man of many talents. His face immortalized forever on the labels of Salad Dressing bottles. Who had a love of racing cars. Married to his wife Joan Woodward for 50 years. You don't see that very often in the Hollywood world.

I grew up watching Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. I couldn't tell how many times I have seen it. To this day it is still one of my favorite movies. If it is on I have to sit down and watch it. Of course he has starred in several great films. Many getting him nominations and wins for the coveted Oscar. Such as Cool Hand Luke, The Hustler, Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, and several more. The list goes on and on.

Off the screen his Charitable contributions are beyond measure. It is sad to lose someone who does so much to try and make this world a better place. Even though he is gone. I know his work will continue to go forward.

So thank you Mr. Newman for all you have done. Wish there were a lot more like you. You will be missed.

New Season of Heroes!

The new season of Heroes premiered last night on NBC. That is exactly what you get in the new Jason Statham movie Death Race. But really that is probably the only reason to see this movie. But that is what I expect out of all movies with Jason Statham. Somewhat decent story. Sub par acting. Awesome action!!! The racing scenes are the main reason to see this movie. It is Mad Max meets The Fast And The Furious! A kill or be killed kind of thing. It was a fun movie but I don't think it one I would need to add to my DVD collection. If you want a synopsis of the movie you can go to IMDB
Or really you can just watch the trailer and you know the whole story!

So if you feel like seeing a movie that doesn't take any brain power to watch and really just want to see things blow up this is the movie for you.

Also this weekend I picked up the Speed Racer DVD. In an earlier blog I said I wasn't quite sure how I felt about it. Well after watching it the second time I can honestly say I loved it! I think the Wachowski brothers did it right and I think they probably had a lot of fun making this film. I am still in awe by some of the racing scenes. As a good friend put it "with acrobatics slick enough to be called "car-fu." It reminded me of playing with matchbox cars as a kid and making them do the impossible through the air but landing on all 4 wheels just fine! How I wish my car had jump jacks!!!!

As I stated I wasn't sure how I felt about the whole visual effects side of it the first time I saw it. I just think it was the shock of it being so different, but I realized the Wachowski brothers are good at doing that. They are visual geniuses. So yes I will add Speed Racer to my DVD collection. (Kind of have to since I bought it)

Shiver me timbers!!!!

Avast!September 19th be thee official talk like thee pirate day. In doing research Marvel has announced the release of it and several other comic book movies, but don't be expecting to be seeing the Avengers Team in theaters very soon. It is not slated for release until July 2011. It looks like we will be seeing the 2nd installment of Iron Man first in the spring of 2010, and a Thor movie later that summer. Also it looks like we will be seeing a Captain America in Spring of 2011. I guess they need to introduce more of the team first.

Rumor also has it that they are going to make the Avenger movie full CG. I hope this isn't true.(I don't think it is) Thanks to The Dark Night we know that it is possible to make one killer live action comic book movie. Yes CG was part of the Dark Knight and is very important, but I wish the film industry would tone it down a bit some times. Just watch Spiderman 3 to see what I mean by to much CG.

So there will be an Avenger movie. But not till 2011. But don't you fret The summer of 2009 isn't looking so bad. Looks like we have Wolverine and Transformers 2 coming are way!

Righteous Kill

So I was bored tonight and decided to catch a movie. Unfortunately the movie I wanted to see (Burn After Reading) wasn't playing in the so called movie theater here. So I went to the new Pacino/De Niro movie Righteous Kill.

This movie is 100% predictable! Two homicide cops, One with a hot temper. There is a serial killer on the loose, killing known criminals. All the evidence points to a cop.Throw in a few more characters to try and stir up the plot. So is it Turk (De Niro)? No Wait maybe it is Turk's forensic officer girlfriend (Carla Gugino) who likes it a little ruff. If you know what I mean. Oh but wait throw in Detective Simon Perez (John Leguizamo)who used to date Turks forensic officer girlfriend. I assure you that anyone with a brain who watches this film will figure out within the first 20 minutes who the killer is.

So this wasn't a great film, but it is nice to see Pacino and De Niro together again. They play the tough cop part well. This is your typical good cop bad cop movie. So who else would you cast. If you watch this movie the ending will somewhat remind you of the ending of another famous movie that De Niro and Pacino starred in together (Heat). Oh wait by saying that did I give away to much? Honestly just watch the trailer and you will probably figure out who the killer is.

DVD of the Week! The Sensation of Sight

Last Sunday I was over at some friends and they popped this DVD in. I had never heard of it before, called The Sensation of Sight. Starring David Strathairn.

The opening scene of this movie is genius! It wide shot of a barn on a foggy morning and in the grass what looks like a body laying there. Soon a garbage truck pulls up picks up some garbage off the side of the road, and then heads on its way. A sheep herder walks by with her sheep paying no attention. Slowly the fog lifts. Finally a kid rides by on his bike. He turns around walks up to the body. He says "Please wake up" No movement. The kid then walks over and picks something up that is laying in the grass, and then runs back to his bike and rides off. So we don't know if the person is sleeping or if he is dead.

The next scene we are introduced to several characters are all tied together one way or another.I could give you a history, but figuring out how everyone is connected is part of the experience. I will admit the movie isn't fast paced, but I love the story and the fact you actually get to know the characters. If you want a basic synopsis on the movie click here IMDB

The cinematography in this film is top notch. The colors alone are amazing. This is definite artsy film. So if you are only into the Hollywood high budget films this is not a movie for you. But if you love a well written, well acted film this is one to watch.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://justanothermoviecritic.blogspot.com/2008/09/dvd-of-week.html' title='DVD of the Week! Movie? Or video game?

Yet another attempt to make a video game into a movie, but I think this one might just work out. Well at least it has to be better then Doom! Max Payne (The Movie) hits theaters October 17, 2008. Based of course on the famous video game. You can go to the official website www.maxpaynethemovie.com to watch a longer trailer and view photos and synopsis of the film. This trailer pumped me up so much that I wanted to go see the movie right away. But as I learn more about it I do get a little worried.

First of all the director is John Moore. Who is John Moore? You ask. Well he has directed a few films you may have heard of. Such as Behind Enemy Lines. (Gene Hackman and Owen Wilson) It was a decent movie but nothing great. He also directed the 2004 version of Flight of the Phoenix.(Dennis Quaid,Miranda Otto) What a stinker that one was! Now the worst part. He directed the 2006 version of The Omen.(Who realy cares who is in it.) Yet another waste of film!!

Another worry I have is the fact that Mila Kunis (That 70's Show and Voice of Meg Griffin on Family Guy) is playing the part of Mona Sax. I just don't see the airhead girl from that 70's show being an assassin. I am going to give this movie a chance. It does look like it could be amazing. Also starring in this movie of course is Mark Wahlberg who plays the role of Max Payne. I don't know if he would be my first choice for casting, but I think it will work.

The trailer alone for this film makes me have to see the movie. Of course the last time I had to see a movie just because of the trailer was so awesome was for the movie 300. I honestly think I enjoyed the 3 minute trailer better then the whole movie. So I hope it isn't the case this time.

This film has not yet been rated, but I am sure by that it will get the big R slapped on it due to violence alone. I don't think I have ever found myself going to the theater so much. To bad I have moved to place where the theaters are not really worth the experience. But that being said it still was a great summer for movie fans. So lets get started1

One of the first movies I saw this summer(well spring) was Iron Man. Directed by Jon Favreau. I will admit I was a bit skeptical about this one at first. I didn't know if Mr. Downey Jr. was the right person for this role, but he proved me wrong. Now I can't imagine anyone else playing the part. I will admit this movie wasn't the best comic book movie ever made, but it is a fun ride and worth owning in your DVD collection. (Release Date September 30th)This isn't a totally stand out movie to me but it is one I could enjoy to watch every year or so.

Next lets talk about the Wachowski brothers attempt to make the cult classic Speed Racer into a movie. I am still not quite sure what to think about the cinemetography and special effects in this film. I have no complaints with the story, and some of the race scenes are down right amazing, but I do think I need to watch it again to truly appreciate it, or truly despise it. Is this one worth putting in my DVD collection? Honestly I am not sure. I will have to rent it one more time to make that final judgement. (DVD Release Date September 16, 2008)

Now for my let down of the summer. Yes George and Steven! You let me down. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was a stinker!!! All these years of waiting for another Dr. Jones movie and you give us the X-files!!! In the first scene I thought maybe Harrison Ford had forgotten how to act!! But he did get better through out the movie. There are definitely some classic Indiana Jones moments throughout the movie, but it just doesn't save it from the weak story. I know I probably am offending some of you die hard Lucas and Spielberg fans, but it is just the way it is. Will I own this one on DVD? Well maybe when they put out the special special edition box set I will buy it just because it comes with the other movies. (DVD Release Date November 11, 2008)

The Happening! Ahhh classic Shyamalan. Of course written and directed by him. This is definitely one of his darkest films ever. But I must admit I loved it!!! What a great idea. Yeah it is a little too environmentalist for me, but there is just something about his writing and directing. I would encourage anyone who hasn't seen this film to take an opportunity to do so. I will admit though if you do not like violence (I mean eerie dark self inflicted violence) This is not the movie for you. (DVD Release Date October 7, 2008)

Another comic book movie to come out this year was The Incredible Hulk. I think they had to redeem themselves for destroying it the first time they made it. It sure was a step up from the 2003 release. Choosing Edward Norton to play Bruce Banner was an interesting choice but I think it worked nicely. Again not a stand out movie, but it was bearable. I love the hint at the end (also in Iron Man) of an Avengers movie. So looking forward to that. Looks like you can pick up the DVD October 21, 2008

Since we are talking super heroes. One movie to come out this summer that I thought was going to be a stinker was Hancock. But to be honest I was somewhat surprised. The story wasn't to bad, there were some laughable moments, and Charlize Theron was smoking hot!!!! I actually walked out of this film somewhat amused. That being said. I don't think is one I will be adding to my DVD collection.

Another film I was excited to see this summer was the movie Wanted. Starring James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie and Morgan freeman. One of the main reasons I actually wanted to see this movie is the fact it was shot on the Red Camera. Yet I live in an area where no digital theaters exist so I didn't truly get to experience the new Digital Format. Oh well at least there was a lot of violence!! And some cool CG work. That was about it. The story got cheesy pretty fast. Receiving assignments from a gigantic weaving loom? But the action scenes alone in this movie made it worth the movie ticket purchase. And of course you can't go wrong with Morgan Freeman!!!

One of my favorite movies of the summer was the second installment of Hellboy. Hellboy II The Golden Army. I was a little let down by some of the acting in this film. Visually though I am still in awe! Guillermo del Toro is the master of dark creatures!! Knowing that he will be directing The Hobbit gives me a lot of comfort!! del Toro I worship the ground you walk on!!

The Dark Knight!!! Need I say more? Hands down the best movie of the summer!! I will probably see it a few more times before it leaves the theater. There is not one thing that I can complain about in this film other then it was over too fast! Both Aaron Eckhart, and Heath Ledger are outstanding in this film. I see a lot of Oscars heading this films way. If not then there will be riots! (Well at least in my living room.) Sorry Jack but there is a new joker in town!!!! To all who made this film possible I have just one thing to say. Thank You!!!!

So those are most of the films I saw this summer. I probably missed a couple. I really didn't go into a lot of depth about each film. This post was more just a summary of the films I was able to see. I hope in future posts to get into more detail of likes and dislikes of certain aspects of films. I hope to be able to give information about upcoming releases. I also hope to improve my writing skills along the way. So please feel free to make comments good or bad.

I love movies

I decided since I love movies so much I would start a new blog. And as many of you who know me know that I can be very cynical about certain things. So this will be my place to vent about certain aspects of films and at the same time give praise to those true masters of the film world. It was a great summer for films. My next post I will blog about what I felt were the hits and what were the misses of the summer of 2008. So stay tuned for that.
